Since 1993 the Revelstoke Community Forest Corporation has been managing the rainforest north of Revelstoke to accommodate the diversity that exists there. To keep ahead of the climate crisis the RCFC found the best planning was to deeply comprehend the lay of the land and to have individual plans in place for each portion of land they were managing. In having a diverse land management plan, they (Mike Copperthwaite RPF – General Manager, Kevin Bollefer – Registered Professional Forrester, Brenda Dyck – Registered Forest Technologist) have been able to ride the wave of climate crisis in Tree Forest Licence 56. Many solutions to managing a complex living ecosystem include: only logging 1/5 of the land mass, 66% of old growth forest to remain unlogged in perpetuity, providing Caribou habitat, clear cutting but leaving old growth standing within the block, thinning 45 year old forests to mimic the ecosystem of old growth forests, to mention just a few of RCFC’s practices. The diversity in management reflects an ethical approach towards the earth. Through the wholistic practices of the management team the RCFC have become leaders in British Columbian forestry management. The forestry practices of Revelstoke Community Forest Corporation are proving profitable and helpful to the good earth and the non-humans who inhabit these 120,000 hectares of rainforest. In my art I will “paint” a few of the rain forest management styles that RCFC have employed. Managing forests wisely must become a climate crisis solution in other communities worldwide. My intention through art is to applaud the climate crisis solutions that have been put in place in our backyard by the Revelstoke Community Forest Corporation.
