Humming Birds

My lush garden at home allows me to have glimpses into the habits and life styles of many avian creatures. Male Rufous hummingbirds are watched as they woo the female with their spectacular flightpath acrobatics, iridescent feather flashes and shrill tweeting songs.

Chickadees

My Mountain Ash tree is a favoured picnic spot in the winter for the chickadees. The berries on the tree provide nutrition and the branches a beautiful perching spot.

Stellar Jays

The Stellar Jays pass through my yard in the winter months. Their robust song often sounds like heckles. I feel this feisty greeting is their way of letting me know they’ve returned and I so enjoys watching them swoop and play in my yard.

Trumpeter Swans

If anything can get me excited it is the beauty and majesty of watching the long-necked Trumpeter Swans return to Old Town Bay on Shuswap Lake in the coldest days of winter. Christmas tradition in my family includes a long walk around the bay to admire the many regal families of Trumpeter Swans on the calm, frigid waters. These migratory birds bring me joy.

Robins

Robins are all across Canada and it is a joy to see them wherever I travel in this country. They noisily chirp at four in the morning to try to coax me out of bed. These personable birds are a joy to see throughout the year in the Shuswap.
