LF²
Lisa Figueroa x Linda Franklin
Acting and re-acting on a series of non-representational pieces of art
to invoke joy and beauty
As in life, each painting by LF² begins with a blank canvas; making a start.
The initial marks are analogous to the first tentative steps on the path of life. The subsequent responses, turn on turn between Figueroa and Franklin are reactions to the accumulation of their previous work on the canvas. There is no road map, no plan, only faith in the amassed skills of their artistic practices.
One of the artists starts the painting by adding: shapes, marks, line or texture to a blank canvas. The artist who puts the first brushstrokes on the canvas passes the canvas to the other artist once they feel satisfied with their initial marks. The receiving artist is free to "play" on the canvas to her hearts content and at her discretion returns the canvas to the first artist. There can be many or few exchanges of the canvas. The exchanges end when both LF and LF agree the painting is completed.
Each work becomes a metaphor for their lives, their relationship and their approach to life. In these dual narratives they are not able to choose the circumstances each new day or each new canvas will bring. They simply do the best they can, having faith in a successful outcome. This is how LF² paintings are made.
The final artistic step is to name the canvases. In completing the paintings we began to realize they were named for events that we both could relate to; "Family Reunion", "Dancing our Hearts Out" and "Return to the River" just to name a few. The paintings were metaphors for experiences we had both experienced.
