We booked the bus; getting off the bus surrounded by trees we walked a few steps off the road and down a path to Lake O'Hara. The first thing I noticed was the beautiful colour of the lake, the sound of a waterfalls, the look of the pristine Rocky Mountains and the fragrance of evergreens in the air; it was pure magic. This erosion creates very finely powdered rock (much smaller than sand) that floats in the glacial melt water. In 1998 while Salmon Arm was burning Sicamous was feeling the fires rage in the hazy skies; particles of fire debris (smoke and ash) fell in our town and over our lakes and beaches. The media reported “20 homes and 15 barns” were destroyed during the firestorm in the Silver Creek area to the South of Salmon Arm, which also produced Canada’s largest civil evacuation up to that date when the “5000 hectare forest fire that forced the removal of 7000 residents of Salmon Arm was being blown toward the Town.” Camille Bains. Earlier this year Dick Cannings (with Bird Studies Canada) had stated that there has been a 12% decline in the bird population of Canada over the last 40 years. Important Bird Areas (IBA) initiated by Birdlife International in the 1980’s came to Canada in 1996 to monitor and protect the most vital places in Canada for birds. An important bird area that has been recognized is the South Thompson River site just east of Kamloops. The site includes the South Thompson River from its origin at Little Shuswap Lake to Kamloops Lake (approximately 70 km in length). Winter surveys of this stretch of the river have revealed 100 to 400 Trumpeter Swans, which represents up to 2% of the global population. Banding studies have revealed that both the Pacific and Rocky Mountain populations of Trumpeter swans are present here. Some breeding birds of interest include 80 Ospreys, four or more Bald Eagles, Wood Ducks and Lewis’ Woodpecker (nationally Vulnerable). On June 28, 2012 the graduating class of Salmon Arm Secondary promenaded through McGuire Lake Park for the last time as high school students, later that evening they attended the official graduation ceremonies. When painting this piece I so wanted the atmosphere to feel hot and yet if you came under the canopy of the willow trees you would be cooled by their embracing foliage. When thinking about passages and transitions I felt the trees were the metaphor for all of us (students, parents, siblings) having to move on with our lives, we could be rejuvenated by the cool breezes of the willows but we all were going to have to leave the security of past bonds (high school, familiarity and small town security) to stand out in the yellow white summer light of our lives. She believes the Watchers are totems surveying the new forest as it grows. These Watchers have witnessed a second forest grow in their midst (which I captured in this painting). David Salmond Mitchell went past the outlet of the famed Adams River, where the carcasses of spawned-out sockeye lay knee deep on the shore, and continued down Shuswap Lake until he reached along inlet called Salmon Arm. At the head of the inlet, running out of a broad, picturesque valley, he found the mouth of a small stream that had been named, simply enough, Salmon. He rowed up the gentle, serpentine stream in the moonlight, his oars almost brushing the shore on each side of the boat. This is what he found: “About a mile from its mouth I tied the bow to along stake that was driven in the bed of the stream. There was no sign of salmon. I unrolled my blankets in the stern and went to sleep. Several times I awoke to listen and look around; there was no sound but the faint gurgle of the passing water around the bow. “In the grey of early morning I was aroused by a commotion, and found the river full of sockeye running upstream. I put in an oar and felt that the river was half fish. The increasing light soon showed that it was red from bank to bank. “Then a stampede or panic occurred, and salmon came surging down, but the river was so full of ascending fish that they blockaded and made a great flat wriggling dam. So jammed were they that they crowded out, and were rushed up the sloping banks out of water. Where the banks steepened, these struggling flapping fish were rolled down onto the backs of the fish in the river bed below, into the mass of which they would again sink. The boat was on fish, on a red, flapping squirming mass. “The fish lower down stream, suffocating for oxygen, had turned and were rushing back to the lake to breathe fresh water through their gills, and the mass subsided. They rushed down stream creating a great noise, like the roar of a storm, or the noise of thousands of wild ducks rising from a lake and followed down stream by a succession of waves. The river was quiet again, flowing by the stake 14 inches below the wet high water mark reached a few minutes before.” Eight years later that run of salmon was extinct. The salmon carcasses become a food source and feed the flora and fauna of the Adams River ecosystem. The cottonwoods by the rivers edge become huge trees; thriving on the fish fertilizer. Not only the Cottonwood trees but the entire ecosystem feed on the rotting Sockeye Salmon. Polluting up to the boarders of the park how could the pollution not infiltrate the park? Irrevocably changing the park so perhaps the park could no longer sustain the fish? When the fish no longer return then the magic of the place is also gone. The past is beginning to show it is impossible to return the environment to the untouched beauty it once was. Perhaps leaving the landscape as untouched by humans is the key. The first time I saw meadows of alpine flowers I knew I had died and gone to heaven. I love the humbleness of this original pose and after years of contemplation her home was found as Mother Earth. On contemplating nudes being interpreted as Elements: Earth, Air, Water and Fire I often thought what do these elements mean to me and how would I define them with feminine characteristics. On Contemplating Earth; I thought, “What does Earth conjure up in my mind?” I saw the brown soil of the planet I garden on and felt the over-riding colour element of the painting should be brown to represent the growth potential of all living things being sustained by the earth. I wanted my Goddess to breath out strong energy – electrical – full of power and potential and for her to ultimately be understood as strength – the strength of the world – thus the gold sensual pastel lines of pure energy emerging from her. She is very skinny to signify that she’s almost exhausted almost been used up by the constant demands the earth is under to sustain. Her head is bent forward due to stress and exhaustion, she’s trying to rest but she still has her breast exposed to nurture those in need even in her exhaustion. Her skin has green overtones to show she represents growth the colour (in my estimation of new life) she’s also green because others envy her and want her and her abilities. The golden tones in her skin are to tie in the myth of the Midas touch. In my estimation the things humans want so badly and will go to any length to steal turns to gold to represent the unappeased levels of greed humans poses. So many of us taking from her that Earth itself could turn to gold and just become a symbol of our greed; the very real threat of us destroying our home. The “Bluebirds of Happiness” are to reassure. It is our choice what direction we choose to fly the birds are signifying that there is still a safe passage to continual life on planet earth but we must fly in that direction. The 6 bluebirds also represent my siblings and the 3 honeybees are: Vern, Eric and Austin the family I’ve created. Birds and bees being the integral image of natural well being and sexual reproduction. Her headdress of cultivated flowers is because my parents and I like to garden. It’s a familial characteristic that allows us to touch the earth and create growth and life. I enjoy cultivated flowers those that grow in Canada and the hibiscus is my connection to Jamaica where my parents are from. Also women have a long history of adorning themselves with natures beauty so Earth should show off her wares. Earth sits in the alpine because I cannot conceive of a more beautiful place to stop, regroup and to meditate on all the possibilities. As mentioned earlier Earth is trying to rest and regain her groove there could be no place more alluring and yet peaceful and calming to reconfigure; to come back to yourself than an alpine meadow high in the mountains with glorious nature made surroundings. Conifers that reflect the face of the wind as they bend to her power, alpine lakes that glisten glacial blue waters, the scent of the wild in every breath one takes, the pure rich neon colours of flower petals against the many green tones of their foliage, the sharp whistles of marmots at play and the constant watchful companionship of Whiskey Jacks. One does not comprehend how powerful a tool imagining can be. It wasn’t until some time after the painting on the card (Dancing our Hearts Out) was completed that I started to comprehend its significance. As you may know Linda Franklin and I have been “acting and reacting” to one another’s marks on canvas in a non-representational way. This image on the card is one of these joint projects. We call ourselves LF². After we had a few paintings completed we started talking about possible titles for the pieces and what significance they have. In retrospect, I now realize that, as I was taking my turn creating this painting, without conscious thought that the the yellow background colour is the warmth of Africa, the red shapes are Africans dancing to the African rhythms and the blue line vertically through the imagery is the Nile. The white tints illuminating the warm tones of the painting are your loved one’s prayers of protection and joy ethereally surrounding your grand experiences which shrouded you on your African journey.
